The Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act makes federal funds available to metropolitan areas and states to assist in health care costs and support services for individuals and families affected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). P.L. 106-345, signed into law in October 2000, reauthorized the act through FY2005. In July 2005, the Bush Administration released its reauthorization principles and an outline of proposed changes to CARE Act programs. Legislation reauthorizing the Ryan White CARE Act is expected to be introduced during the 109th Congress. CARE Act programs received $2.02 billion in FY2004 and $2.073 billion in FY2005. The President requested $2.083 billion for FY2006, an increase of $10 million for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. This report will be updated periodically.
